The Post Workout Recovery Shake
by Shaun Stafford
If you look into the kit bag of any top athlete or sportsperson you are likely to see a post-workout shake nestled somewhere between the gym socks and spandex. If wondering why, here are a few very good reasons why you, like most athletes, should take this form of supplement seriously.
- There are countless studies that suggest that a post work-out, high-protein shake really can make a difference to the amount of kick-back you get from your gym sessions. One study stated that a training response can be increased by up to 35% with the use of such supplements; a subtle blend of protein and carbohydrates post workout is exactly what your body is craving, and exactly what it needs to recover from all that work!
- After intense exercise, the stress hormone cortisol is at its highest. A quick intake of protein, and certain amino-acids, swiftly switches your body from a catabolic state, into the healthy anabolic mode, aiding recovery and muscle growth.
- The intake of Glutamine immediately post-workout provides the best source of energy for our intestinal and immune surveillance cells. This helps maintain intestinal integrity and function, in addition to promoting immune cell reproductive health; always a good thing when burning the candle at both ends!
- The inclusion of CLA (Congugated Linoleic Acid) into the recovery shake has been scientifically proven to increase the level of body fat preferentially used for energy by the body during and after exercise. This is especially relevant to fat stored around the abdominal region; my guess the area you are trying to hit…
- This shake can act as a Meal Replacement for those on weight management programmes. It is often difficult to squeeze in all the regular meals and snacks throughout the day. These products provide a nutritionally sound and convenient source for regulating and getting enough macro-nutrients into your body at the right times.
Anyone who undertakes frequent or intensive exercise would benefit from adding a post-workout shake to their kit bag. If you would like advice on good brands or products, talk to a nutritionist or your trainer during one of your sessions and I’m sure they would be happy to point you in the right direction.
